President’s Message:
The hobby of ornamental fish keeping is becoming increasingly popular in all parts of the country including rural India. It is estimated that presently 1.25% of urban households are keeping an aquarium either at home or workplace which is expected to grow to 5.00% in the next decade. It would be possible as both annual average per capita income (AAPCI) and the number of Middle Income Group Households (MIGHh) that are considered important indicators of any developing economy are continuously achieving higher peaks.

About Us
Introduction
Ornamental Fisheries Training and Research Institute (OFTRI) was established by Dr Atul Kumar Jain in 2006 as a privately-owned institute which is presently governed as a trust. The founder was a “Fisheries Scientist” at Central Institute of Fisheries Education (Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi)
Recognition
Our continuous efforts to work towards our mission of “Promoting ornamental fish keeping hobby through entrepreneurship promotion and skill development” has helped us to get recognition by several government agencies for imparting entrepreneurship and skill development training in ornamental fisheries.
Facilities
The centre is equipped with modern teaching facilities as well as for practical classes. There is a classroom with a sitting capacity of 35 trainees which is equipped with the latest audio-video aids. There are indoor and outdoor hatcheries, a workshop and a well-equipped laboratory for water and soil analysis.
Faculty
The training faculty at OFTRI included highly qualified and experienced personals. The faculty members are having expertise in different fields of ornamental fisheries viz; ornamental fish production, farm designing, aquarium fabrication, marketing as well as entrepreneurship development.

Training is one of the main and most important activities of OFTRI. A number of training programs that include both self-finance as well as government sponsored are organized by the institute from time to time. The self-finance programs are of 5 days duration and need based whereas the government sponsored programs are of 25-45 days duration and organized subsequent to approval of the sponsoring agencies. However, a training program either self-finance or government sponsored aims at upgrading the knowledge & skills of the participants in the field of “Ornamental fisheries” through teaching theoretical concepts along with live demonstrations, films and hands-on experience.
A student pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree or an entrepreneur who wants to have hands-on training in the field of ornamental fisheries could join us as an Intern. The period of internship may be decided as per the requirement of the applicant. An intern will be attached with some on-going activity viz; ornamental fish production, farm operation and management, aquarium retail outlet, aquarium fabrication and installation etc. An intern could join us as a regular employee after successful completion of the internship
We strongly support entrepreneurship development in the field of ornamental fisheries. Anyone who is willing to set up any business related to ornamental fisheries may contact us for preparation of a “Detailed Project Report” for availing funding support including a loan from banks and subsidy (grant) from government departments. An Interested candidate may pre-register and contact for further details.
Institute is equipped with adequate facilities to undertake both field and laboratory-based research projects. Few important fields of our research interest are:
- The market survey of the aquarium industry.
- Culture of live feeds.
- Maturation enhancement in selected ornamental fishes.
- Breeding of native ornamental fish.
- Colour enhancement in ornamental fishes.
Any PG students want to work on a research project as part of their dissertation/thesis requirement may pre-register and contact for further details.
