Training

Training is one of the main and most important activities of OFTRI. A number of training programs that include both self-finance as well as government sponsored are organized by the institute from time to time. The self-finance programs are of 5 days duration and need based whereas the government sponsored programs are of 25-45 days duration and organized subsequent to approval of the sponsoring agencies. However, a training program either self-finance or government sponsored aims at upgrading the knowledge & skills of the participants in the field of “Ornamental fisheries” through teaching theoretical concepts along with live demonstrations, films and hands-on experience. Any training program is so designed that a participant should be able to set up his/her own business related to ornamental fisheries while those who are already in the business, able to further upgrade.  The details of all these different programs along with fee, eligibility and course contents etc. are described as Featured Training Programs. Skill development training for job role as
“Ornamental Fish Technician” (25 Days)

  • About the course: The Agriculture skill council of India (ASCI) under the auspices of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India has identified the need of skill development in “Ornamental Fisheries”. The ASCI has developed standardized course contents termed as “Qualification Packs (QP)” that are delivered to the participants as per specified delivery methods termed as “National Occupational standards (NOS)” considering the potential of livelihood generation and employment in this sector.  The course is designed to skill persons of any level of education with such abilities that they could either plan to become self employed or get employment in the field of ornamental fisheries.  A candidate will be required to appear for an assessment test on the last date which is conducted by ASCI.
  • Course Contents: The QP is consisted of 100 hours of theory and 100 hours of practical classes as per the guidelines of ASCI and to be covered within 25 days. The important topics of training are:
    1. Identification of different ornamental fish species of commercial importance.
    2. Tank fabrication and pond preparation activities.
    3. Feeding regime and live feed preparatory methods.
    4. Health management of ornamental fishes.
    5. Breeding, culture and seed production.
    6. Regulation of safety, hygiene and sanitation practices.
    7. Government scheme for availing funding support
    8. Preparation of project reports for availing funding from developmental and financial institutions.
  • Course Contents: The entire training module is divided into four different sections. The contents of each section are described in table below:

  • Course fee : The training is completely free of cost including lodging and boarding. However, the schedule of training is not known in advance. An interested candidate may pre-register to be informed about these programmes.
  • Benefits: A participant subsequent to successful completion of the training, could submit a project proposal to MANAGE/NFDB through the NTI for setting up Aqua-one centers or aqua-farming related business and will be eligible for grant of Rs.10.00 lakh maximum.

Agri-clinic and Agri-Business Centre (45 Days)

  • About the course: The Agri-clinic and Agri-Business Centre (AC & ABC) programme  is an initiative of   National Institute of Agriculture Extension Management (Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Government of India), Hyderabad i.e. MANAGE.  The objective of AC & ABC is to empower graduates of agriculture and allied disciplines  (fisheries/Life sciences) with such skills and technical capabilities that they are either able to set up a “Service Provide Centers” known as “Agri-clinic and Agri-Business Centre to help the aquaculture farmers or plan to set up their own aqua-farming or related start ups. The ACABC is being implemented in country by many number of Nodal Training Institute (NTI). Normally a NTI under AC&ABC covers all disciplines of agriculture, dairy, animal husbandry and fisheries. But, the OFTRI has been selected to impart training in  fisheries and aquaculture related disciplines only.

  • Course fee:The training is completely free of cost including lodging and boarding. However, the schedule of training is not known in advance. An interested candidate is advised to pre-register for advanced intimation about forthcoming progrmmes.
  • Admission: Admission is based on scrutiny of applications by a panel including officials/representative of MANAGE followed by a telephonic interview.
  • Benefits: A participant is entitled to avail funding up to Rs. 20.00 lakh from a nationalized bank including subsidy up to 35% to set up their business.

Entrepreneurship development and management training in
Ornamental Fish Production and Aquarium Trade (5 Days)

  • About the course: Entrepreneurship development and management training in ornamental fish production and Aquarium trade (EDMT in OFPAT) is a very short duration programme organized on self-finance mode only. It is specifically designed to cater to the need of those professionals who are working in other fields but want to set up their own business in the field of ornamental fish production and/or aquarium trade. However, due to limitation of sparing time from the ongoing employment or business, they are unable to take leave to join a long duration training programme. This course is also useful for those persons who are working in the field of ornamental fisheries but neither having a formal education nor a proper experience in this field.
  • Course Contents: The course contents are designed to provide a larger view of the ornamental fish industry and entrepreneurship development opportunities in the field. More emphasis is given on one to one interaction in addition to classroom lectures.
